Secondary Tutoring

The secondary years are when subjects really start to deepen

Maths becomes more abstract, Science develops into a major part of the curriculum, and English increasingly asks students to analyse texts and develop more structured, analytical writing.

Our tutors take the time to understand what your child already knows and what they need to work on next. One-to-one lessons can then focus on the areas that will make the greatest difference to their progress.

The right support depends on where your child is now

They've found the subject difficult for some time

Some students have been struggling with a subject for a while. Gaps in their knowledge and skills can make new work harder to understand, especially when it depends on something they haven't fully grasped before.

They're beginning to find the work more difficult

A student may have been managing well but start to struggle as subjects become more demanding. They may understand much of what they're learning but find particular topics or types of work increasingly difficult.

They're capable of more than they're currently showing

A student may understand more than their schoolwork or assessments suggest. With individual attention, their tutor can develop a clearer picture of what's holding them back and help them produce work that better reflects what they're capable of.

They're doing well and are ready for greater challenge

Some students are already progressing well at school and would benefit from being stretched further. One-to-one tutoring gives them time to tackle more demanding work and develop a deeper understanding of what they're learning.

A classroom can't revolve around one child

Even an excellent teacher has to make decisions about what will work for the class as a whole. They can adapt their teaching, but they can't continually adjust the pace and level of the work around one child.

One-to-one tutoring is different. Your child's tutor can see what they understand as they work together and make decisions about what to do next. The pace and level of the work can be adjusted around your child, rather than being determined by the needs of the wider class.

As subjects deepen, so does the thinking they require

Developing a deeper understanding

As subjects develop, students aren't simply learning more content. New ideas increasingly build on what they have learned before, so understanding earlier work properly becomes more important. One-to-one tutoring can strengthen areas that aren't yet secure and help your child make sense of more demanding material.

Learning to apply what they know

Students are also increasingly expected to apply their knowledge rather than simply reproduce what they have been taught. In Maths, that might mean deciding which method to use to solve a problem. In English, it could mean analysing why a writer has made particular choices. In Science, it might mean using what they know to explain why something happens.

Getting started

A thoughtful match, from the very first conversation.

Tell us about your child

We want to understand more than the subject or subjects they need support with. Tell us about your child, what they're like, what they enjoy and what you'd like them to achieve through tutoring.

We consider the right tutor

We use what you've told us, alongside your child's academic needs, to decide which of our tutors we think will suit them best. If they need support across more than one subject, we'll also consider whether it's better for them to work with one tutor or more.

Meet in a free taster session

Your child meets the tutor we think will suit them best and experiences a lesson together. It's a chance to see how they get on before you decide whether you'd like to continue.

Begin ongoing tutoring

If you'd like to continue after the taster, we'll get everything set up for your child to begin their ongoing weekly tutoring.

Lasting progress

Tutoring that develops as your child progresses

A lot can change during the secondary years. The areas where your child needs support or greater challenge can shift as they progress through school. Regular weekly tutoring allows the focus of their lessons to evolve with them, rather than remaining tied to the reason they first started tutoring.

Our memberships are designed around ongoing weekly tutoring, with the number of sessions shaped around the support your child needs.
