A-level Tutoring

A-levels are a significant step up

Subjects are studied in much greater depth than at GCSE, while students are expected to take more responsibility for their own learning. It's a transition that even students who did very well at GCSE can find demanding.

Our tutors help students meet those greater demands. By getting to know the student and how they're managing their A-levels, they can provide the right level of support and challenge as the course develops, while helping them become better at managing their own learning.

Students respond to the step up in different ways

They've found the transition harder than expected

A student can start A-level having achieved strong GCSE results and still find the transition difficult. The pace can feel different, and ways of working that served them well before may no longer be enough.

There are parts of the course they haven't fully understood

They may be managing the subject overall but finding particular areas difficult. At A-level, gaps in earlier understanding can become more significant when later work depends on what has already been taught.

Their grades don't reflect what they know

A student may understand much of what they're learning but struggle to turn that understanding into marks. They may know the content but find it much harder to use that knowledge effectively when faced with demanding exam questions.

They're aiming for higher grades

Some students come to us with a particular grade they are working towards. A student currently achieving B or C grades may be aiming for an A or A*. One-to-one tutoring gives them focused time to strengthen the areas limiting their marks and work at a more demanding level.

A-level tutoring that responds to your child

At A-level, lessons can move quickly through complex material. Your child may understand enough to follow what is happening in class without having the depth of understanding they need to tackle the work independently. By working regularly with your child, their tutor develops a clear picture of what they really understand and where they need more support.

One-to-one lessons can then focus on what will make the greatest difference. Difficult material can be explored properly rather than left behind as the class moves on. When your child is ready for greater challenge, their tutor can introduce more demanding work.

Over time, your child should become more confident taking responsibility for their own learning and tackling difficult work independently.

What strong A-level study looks like

Building secure knowledge and making connections

Your child needs a strong grasp of the individual topics within their course. At A-level, they also need to understand how different ideas connect and draw on earlier learning when studying more advanced material. Their tutor can identify where knowledge isn't secure and help them develop a more connected understanding of the subject.

Applying what they know

Understanding something when it is being explained is different from being able to use that understanding independently. Your child needs experience tackling demanding work without always being shown the route through it first. Their tutor can work through difficult problems or questions with them before gradually expecting your child to take more of the lead.

Turning understanding into exam marks

Knowing the subject and performing well in an A-level exam aren't quite the same thing. Tutors can use past-paper and exam-style questions to identify where marks are being lost, then work directly on those areas. This helps your child become more precise about what a question requires and more effective at showing what they know under exam conditions.

Getting started

A thoughtful match, from the very first conversation.

Tell us about your child

We want to understand more than the subject or subjects they need support with. Tell us about your child, what they're like, what they enjoy and what you'd like them to achieve through tutoring.

We consider the right tutor

We use what you've told us, alongside your child's academic needs, to decide which of our tutors we think will suit them best. If they need support across more than one subject, we'll also consider whether it's better for them to work with one tutor or more.

Meet in a free taster session

Your child meets the tutor we think will suit them best and experiences a lesson together. It's a chance to see how they get on before you decide whether you'd like to continue.

Begin ongoing tutoring

If you'd like to continue after the taster, we'll get everything set up for your child to begin their ongoing weekly tutoring.

Lasting progress

Regular support throughout their A-levels

As your child moves through their A-levels, new learning builds on what has come before and the demands of the course increase. Regular weekly tutoring gives their tutor a clear picture of how they're progressing, so the focus of their lessons can change with them.

Our memberships are designed around ongoing weekly tutoring, with the number of sessions shaped around the support your child needs.
