Science Tutoring

Helping your child understand Science more deeply

Science covers a huge range of knowledge across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. As your child moves through school, they need to understand increasingly complex ideas and become more confident applying what they know.

We take the time to understand where your child is now and which areas of Science they most need to develop. One-to-one lessons can then focus on those areas, helping them strengthen their understanding and tackle increasingly demanding work.

Understanding one idea often helps another make sense

Scientific ideas rarely stand alone. Understanding how they connect helps your child make sense of what they're learning rather than relying on memory alone.

These connections become particularly important when new learning builds on ideas your child has met before. Understanding cells provides a foundation for later Biology, ideas about particles help make sense of much of Chemistry, and forces and energy appear throughout Physics.

In one-to-one lessons, your child's tutor can identify where their understanding is less secure and help them make the connections that bring a topic together. They can also build on strong understanding by exploring ideas in greater depth and introducing more challenging work.

Knowing the Science is only part of the challenge

A student might understand a scientific idea when it is explained to them, but find it much harder to use that understanding in an unfamiliar question. As Science becomes more demanding, they are increasingly expected to work out how their knowledge applies in different contexts.

In one-to-one lessons, your child's tutor can help them develop this by exploring how the Science they have learned can be used and applied. They can show your child how to approach unfamiliar problems and, as their understanding develops, encourage them to work things out more independently.

‍

What it means to become stronger at Science

Science involves learning a lot of knowledge. Becoming stronger at the subject means developing a good understanding of that knowledge and becoming increasingly confident using it.

Building scientific knowledge and understanding

Building scientific knowledge takes more than remembering isolated facts. Your child needs to learn important information securely while understanding the ideas behind it and how different concepts connect.

Working with evidence and experiments

Science is also about investigating how the world works. Your child needs to understand how experiments are designed and be able to make sense of the evidence they produce. They need to interpret results and think carefully about what those results do and don't show.

Using Maths in Science

Maths is an important part of Science. This can mean using and rearranging equations in Physics, calculating moles and concentrations in Chemistry, or interpreting numerical data in Biology. Becoming more confident with the mathematical side of Science can make a significant difference to how well your child handles more demanding work.

Getting started

A thoughtful match, from the very first conversation.

Tell us about your child

We want to understand more than the subject or subjects they need support with. Tell us about your child, what they're like, what they enjoy and what you'd like them to achieve through tutoring.

We consider the right tutor

We use what you've told us, alongside your child's academic needs, to decide which of our tutors we think will suit them best. If they need support across more than one subject, we'll also consider whether it's better for them to work with one tutor or more.

Meet in a free taster session

Your child meets the tutor we think will suit them best and experiences a lesson together. It's a chance to see how they get on before you decide whether you'd like to continue.

Begin ongoing tutoring

If you'd like to continue after the taster, we'll get everything set up for your child to begin their ongoing weekly tutoring.

Lasting progress

Regular Science tutoring that develops with your child

What your child is learning in Science will change considerably over time. Regular weekly lessons allow their tutor to build on what they've already learned and adjust the focus of their tutoring as new topics and challenges arise.

Our memberships are designed around ongoing weekly tutoring, with the number of sessions shaped around the support your child needs.
