The primary years matter
Maths and English provide many of the skills children use across their education. Building strong skills in both matters, and feeling confident about their learning is equally important.
Our tutors get to know your child and how they learn. One-to-one lessons give them the time and individual attention to strengthen their skills, make progress and grow in confidence.
Every child has their own starting point
Maths or English doesn't come easily to them
Some students have to work harder to make sense of Maths or English. They may need more explanation and practice before new ideas become secure, and can benefit from having regular time each week to work at a pace that suits them.
There are gaps in their foundations
Sometimes important earlier learning isn't secure. This can make new work increasingly difficult when it relies on knowledge or skills a student hasn't fully developed. Regular one-to-one tutoring can strengthen those foundations while helping them keep up with what they're learning at school.
They've lost confidence in themselves
Sometimes parents can see that the difficulty is becoming about more than the schoolwork itself. Their child may say they're “bad at Maths” or “can't do English”, become upset when homework feels difficult, or worry about getting an answer wrong. Regular encouragement and the experience of making progress can help change how they see themselves as a learner.
They're doing well and ready for greater challenge
Some students are already progressing well at school and would benefit from being stretched further. One-to-one tutoring gives them time to explore more demanding work and think more deeply about what they're learning.

Teaching shaped around your child
In a classroom, a teacher has to consider the needs of the whole class. One-to-one tutoring allows the teaching to be shaped much more closely around your child. Their tutor can give them extra time and support when something is difficult, while making sure the work provides the right level of challenge.
As they work together each week, their tutor gets to know your child and what helps things click for them. They know which explanations work best and when your child needs more support or is ready to be challenged further.
Building strong skills in Maths and English
Developing a secure understanding of Maths
A strong grasp of number and calculation gives children an important basis for much of their Primary Maths. As they progress, topics such as fractions become more demanding and build on what they have learned before. Their tutor can strengthen areas that aren't yet secure and help them apply their understanding when solving problems.
Becoming a stronger reader
Reading at this age is increasingly about understanding rather than simply reading the words on the page. Children learn to identify important information, make inferences and use evidence from a text to support their ideas. Their tutor can teach these skills directly and give your child regular opportunities to practise them with increasingly demanding texts.
Learning to write clearly and effectively
As children progress through Primary school, they're expected to develop and organise their ideas more effectively in writing. Their tutor can help them express those ideas clearly, while supporting them to improve their spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence construction.

“Devon tailored the content of the lessons specifically to what my son needed, which helped to build a strong understanding of the fundamentals. Most importantly he was encouraging and supportive throughout, helping to build both skills and confidence. We would definitely recommend using Tutoring Heroes.”
“My daughter has made a huge improvement since undertaking tutoring - her confidence has grown significantly, she asks questions and her engagement at school has improved. My daughter is inspired by her tutor and looks forward to the session every week and she really enjoys learning. I am so pleased we decided to use Tutoring Heroes.”
Getting started
A thoughtful match, from the very first conversation.
Tell us about your child
We want to understand more than the subject or subjects they need support with. Tell us about your child, what they're like, what they enjoy and what you'd like them to achieve through tutoring.
We consider the right tutor
We use what you've told us, alongside your child's academic needs, to decide which of our tutors we think will suit them best. If they need support across more than one subject, we'll also consider whether it's better for them to work with one tutor or more.
Meet in a free taster session
Your child meets the tutor we think will suit them best and experiences a lesson together. It's a chance to see how they get on before you decide whether you'd like to continue.
Begin ongoing tutoring
If you'd like to continue after the taster, we'll get everything set up for your child to begin their ongoing weekly tutoring.
Lasting progress
Tutoring that develops with your child
What your child needs from tutoring can change considerably during the primary years. Regular weekly lessons allow their tutor to respond as new needs emerge, while continuing to build on the progress your child has already made.
Our memberships are designed around ongoing weekly tutoring, with the number of sessions shaped around the support your child needs.

Tell us about your child
Tell us a little about your child and what you're looking for from tutoring. We'll then consider which of our tutors we think will suit them best, starting with a free taster session.
