Helping your child become stronger at Maths
Maths builds on what has been learned before, so understanding where your child is now really matters. Our tutors take the time to find out what they understand and what they need to work on next.
One-to-one lessons can then focus on the Maths that will make the greatest difference to their progress, with greater challenge when they're ready for it.
Difficulties in Maths often build on what came before
Maths is a subject where new learning often depends on earlier understanding. When that earlier understanding isn't secure, new topics can become increasingly difficult as the Maths becomes more demanding.
In one-to-one lessons, your child can get help with the Maths they're currently finding difficult, while their tutor also identifies and strengthens any earlier understanding it depends on. This helps them make progress with what they're learning now while building stronger foundations for what comes next.
For a child who is already doing well, there is always room to progress further. Their tutor can identify where they could improve and introduce more challenging work as their understanding develops.

An explanation needs to make sense to the child hearing it
There isn't one explanation that will make a mathematical idea click for every child. A good Maths tutor can approach an idea in different ways, breaking down difficult concepts and modelling the Maths clearly so your child can see how and why it works.
In one-to-one lessons, their tutor can see whether your child has really understood something and respond straight away when they haven't. They can spend longer on an idea when needed and increase the level of challenge when your child is ready.
What it means to become stronger at Maths
As your child progresses, the Maths they have already learned becomes increasingly important to what comes next. Becoming stronger at Maths means being able to draw on that learning confidently when they need it.
Developing mathematical fluency
Important mathematical facts and methods need to become readily available when your child needs them. Number bonds and times tables are obvious examples at Primary level, but the same principle continues as Maths becomes more advanced. When this knowledge is secure, your child can use it accurately without having to work everything out from scratch each time.
Developing a connected understanding of Maths
Mathematical ideas don't exist in isolation. The relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages is one example of how different areas of Maths connect. Their tutor can help your child understand these connections and develop a more joined-up understanding of the subject.
Applying Maths to solve problems
Knowing a mathematical fact or method doesn't necessarily mean a student will recognise when to use it. As Maths becomes more demanding, questions increasingly require your child to draw on different knowledge and skills, decide what is relevant and work out a route to the answer. Their tutor can help them practise doing this with increasingly challenging problems.

“We have received our son's end of term reports and in particular, his maths PUMA exam results which show a dramatic increase in his ability. He is now well above the median of the class and his teacher has been very impressed with his work. We have also seen an increase in his confidence. He is quite proud of himself as we are of him. We think this is largely down to Mia's good work and her patience. It is quite evident that he enjoys his sessions with Mia. We are really pleased with this result.”
“This is the second time we have used Tutoring Heroes for supporting my children with their Maths GCSE. On both occasions communication has been excellent and supportive. For my daughter, Niya is excellent at explaining mathematical concepts and works through exam-style questions ensuring my daughter has a clear understanding of the maths involved, how to show working out and how to check answers. My daughter looks forward to the sessions each week. I would highly recommend.”
Getting started
A thoughtful match, from the very first conversation.
Tell us about your child
We want to understand more than the subject or subjects they need support with. Tell us about your child, what they're like, what they enjoy and what you'd like them to achieve through tutoring.
We consider the right tutor
We use what you've told us, alongside your child's academic needs, to decide which of our tutors we think will suit them best. If they need support across more than one subject, we'll also consider whether it's better for them to work with one tutor or more.
Meet in a free taster session
Your child meets the tutor we think will suit them best and experiences a lesson together. It's a chance to see how they get on before you decide whether you'd like to continue.
Begin ongoing tutoring
If you'd like to continue after the taster, we'll get everything set up for your child to begin their ongoing weekly tutoring.
Lasting progress
Regular Maths tutoring that develops with your child
What your child needs to work on in Maths will change as they progress. Regular weekly lessons allow their tutor to build on what they've already learned and adjust the focus of their tutoring as their Maths develops.
Our memberships are designed around ongoing weekly tutoring, with the number of sessions shaped around the support your child needs.

Tell us about your child
Tell us a little about your child, how they're getting on with Maths and what you're looking for from tutoring. We'll then consider which of our tutors we think will suit them best, starting with a free taster session.
