Helping children get more from their education

Tutoring Heroes was founded on the belief that children are often capable of achieving far more than they are currently showing.

One-to-one tutoring allows the teaching to be centred around the individual child in a way that simply isn't possible in a busy classroom. It creates the time to understand what a child needs and adapt the support around them.

Individual attention is only part of what makes one-to-one tutoring work. We believe the relationship a child has with their tutor can make a huge difference to their confidence, engagement with learning and ultimately what they achieve.

It started in the classroom

Before starting Tutoring Heroes, I was a teacher and Head of History at Jersey College for Girls. One of the things I learnt quite quickly was how much more students would engage and work for you when you took a genuine interest in them. Getting to know them also made it easier to find ways of explaining or exploring a subject that would capture their interest.

I also became increasingly aware of the limitations of teaching a large class. However much time and effort I put in, there was only so much individual attention I could give each student. There were students I knew were capable of achieving more, but I couldn't always give them the individual support and challenge that would help them do so.

These experiences were a big part of what drew me to tutoring. I had seen the difference it made when I really knew my students, but also the limits of how much individual attention I could give them in a classroom. Working one-to-one gave me the time to understand each student properly and adapt the way I taught around them. I could respond much more closely to what they needed, including when they were ready to be challenged further.

Becoming more than tutoring

As Tutoring Heroes grew, I realised that parents often had questions about their child's wider education that went beyond what was happening in their tutoring sessions. They might want help understanding a school report or feedback from a teacher or simply have questions about what their child was learning at school. As children got older, decisions around subjects, qualifications and the next stages of their education could also be difficult for parents to navigate.

I found that I really enjoyed having these conversations with parents. It was rewarding to use my experience in education to help them work out what to do next. Over time, this became an increasingly important part of what Tutoring Heroes offered.

Today, supporting families with their wider educational questions remains an important part of what we do. Parents have experienced teachers they can turn to when they need help understanding something about their child's education or want to talk through a decision.

One tutor who knows them. A team behind them.

The relationship between your child and their tutor is at the heart of what we do. Alongside their tutor, Alan and Lara bring their experience as qualified teachers to maintaining the quality of the tutoring and keeping a close eye on your child's progress. You can also turn to them when you have questions about your child's wider education.
