Practical Tips for Supporting Reading at Home

Following the announcement in Guernsey of the discontinuation of States of Guernsey funding to the Dyslexia Day Centre, many parents of children who have additional English and literacy needs, including dyslexia, are looking for more ways that they can support their child's learning.
Of course, many families opt to work with our English tutors here at Tutoring Heroes Guernsey to boost their child's opportunities, whether their child has a recognised additional literacy need or not.
All reading is valid
There's a whole wealth of genres and applications for reading available both on and offline. Here are some great tips for ALL learners to support and encourage a range of reading skills at home:
Subtitles – gives children the opportunity to follow along and see words in real time.
Audiobooks – particularly useful for students studying longer, more complex texts.
Graphic Novels – a fun and accessible way to engage in reading, promoting inference and comprehension skills.
Film, TV and Theatre adaptations – allow students to experience a study text in a more relatable way.
Hi-Lo Books – high interest, low reading challenge, perfect for children who need additional support.
Online reading – places a whole world of words at learners' fingertips and helps build research skills.
Apps – a range of apps support reading, many designed for learners with specific needs.
Using technology – speech-to-text and text-to-speech tools can free up cognitive processing space.
Screen Free Alternatives – visiting one of Guernsey's museums or galleries provides reading in context opportunities.
